First Place: Slowly it devours village after village
May 31, 2024

Coal burning underground for more than 108 years. The underground coal fires around Jharia, has been burning for 108 years. And there is enough coal to burn for at least 108 years more. But nothing has been done. The fires slowly devour house after house, village after village. This is the village of Bastikola. Or more correct; what’s left of it. Half of the village has been “eaten” by the fires. And people here live with extreme pollution and extreme heat year-round. While they wait for their house to be swallowed by the flames.
